In response to the dramatic rise in Catalytic Converter theft, Maple Fleet Services have launched CatSecure, a new theft prevention device. A bespoke design specifically for the Mercedes Sprinter, CatSecure is a cost effective solution that takes around 15minutes to fit, potentially saving businesses thousands of pounds.

The rising scrap metal value has meant Catalytic Converters have become highly lucrative, thanks to the precious metal content of Platinum, Rhodium and Palladium. Commercial vehicles, like the Mercedes Sprinter, have become highly targeted due to ease of access to the Catalytic Converter, which a determined thief can retrieve in less than 5 minutes.

Replacing a stolen Catalytic Converter costs up to £1,500, even before factoring in other damage caused to the vehicle by a thief as a result of the removal. The consequential effect on the business is further reaching – with driver and vehicle downtime, hire vehicle costs, increased insurance premiums, missed deliveries and loss of business all impacting on the bottom line. A feature of the latest Euro 5 Sprinter (from 2009 onwards) is the repositioning of the Catalytic Converter closer to the engine at the front of the vehicle. CatSecure is a key-operated bonnet lock that prevents access to the engine compartment, even in the event that forced entry is gained to the cab and the bonnet-release activated, making it almost impossible for a thief to reach, let alone remove the cat.
