The Human Factor in Road Risk

Work-related road risk is one of the most significant, yet under-recognised, health and safety challenges facing organisations today. More people are killed or injured in work-related driving incidents than in all other workplace accidents combined, with human behaviour responsible for most cases.

This session explores why competent drivers still make unsafe decisions, using behavioural science and real-world data to examine the impact of pressure, fatigue, distraction, speed, impairment and seatbelt use. Focusing on the “Fatal Five” high-risk behaviours, it challenges the assumption that experience alone guarantees safety and outlines what effective road risk management looks like in practice – from training and policy to wellbeing and technology.
