New air-conditioning and heating systems for electric vans and minibuses from Webasto

At the Commercial Vehicle Show in Birmingham, Webasto will present a new fully electric Cool Top 120-e air-conditioning system as well as modular PTC air heaters. These and other heating and cooling products can be seen live in hall 5B, at booth 50.

Doncaster – March 2, 2026 – The new rooftop air-conditioning system delivers up to 12 kilowatts of cooling power. It is suitable for electric vehicles with a 400-volt DC power supply, like minibuses, light commercial vehicles and ambulances. Thanks to its intelligent variable compressor control, it is very efficient and quiet.

The device has been specially developed for light commercial vehicles with electric drives and operates with voltages between 250 and 460 volts DC. The maximum power consumption at 350 volts is 7.5 amps. Thanks to its high cooling capacity, it reliably ensures pleasant interior temperatures even in hot outside conditions and with a full load.

Measuring 1,605 x 1,290 x 300 millimeters, the air conditioning system is very compact in design despite its high performance and weighs only around 80 kilograms. It uses R1234yf as a refrigerant, which contributes to the system's environmental friendliness thanks to its low global warming potential (GWP). The system is delivered pre-filled.

Cool Top 120-e cools the vehicle, both when stationary and while driving. Once the target temperature has been reached, the variable speed control of the compressor automatically adjusts the output to the cooling demand. The system then operates at partial load, making it very quiet. A fresh-air function provides additional comfort in the vehicle when required.

The roof-mounted system can be integrated into existing vehicle systems via CAN bus or controlled via an optional Webasto control unit. Thanks to its plug-and-play design, installation and commissioning are very quick and easy.

The housing of the rooftop air-conditioning system can be painted in the colour of the vehicle. Air outlets and ducts can be individually specified.

Webasto expands its portfolio with PTC air heaters for electric vans

If the warm air from the vehicle heater, which enters the interior or an electric van via the dashboard, is not sufficient for the rear of the vehicle, additional heaters are required. These are connected to the vehicle's electric Power Take Off (ePTO) to draw their power from the high-voltage drive battery with provision for low-voltage supply via the vehicles 12v/24v electrical system dependant on vehicle platform.

Webasto uses PTC heating technology for its new “Air Flow” air heaters. The “Air Flow” modules can be combined as desired or installed and controlled individually in the interior. They convert 100 percent of the electricity into heating energy.

PTC stands for “Positive Temperature Coefficient” and refers to an electric heating element whose resistance increases as the temperature rises. As it gets hotter, less current flows, causing it to regulate itself and prevent overheating. These heating elements are very safe, efficient, and durable.

One module of the new Webasto heater measures 200 x 155 x 150 millimeters (L x W x H) and delivers up to 700 watts of heating power. In addition, there are pre-assembled systems consisting of two or three modules, which provide up to 2,100 watts of system power. However, individual modules can also be installed independently in separate areas of the vehicle. This is particularly advantageous for electric vehicles with limited installation space or where different temperature zones are desired.

Various manual and digital controls are available for operation. The elements can also be integrated into existing vehicle systems via an optional CAN and LIN interface. Operation via app using Bluetooth is in preparation and can be retrofitted later if required. Depending on the control option selected, various heating programs and timer options with individual settings are available.

The heating elements are available in versions for 12-volt DC and 230-volt AC power supplies.
