Chris Demetriou
Chris Demetriou serves as the Assistant Director of Corporate Fleet, Transport, and Accessible Community Transport at the London Borough of Islington. In his role as the council's operator's license holder, he manages a diverse fleet of over 550 vehicles. A central focus of Chris's work is leading the council’s fleet electrification programme, which aims to transition existing vehicles to fully battery-electric models in support of the council's commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2030.
With more than 20 years of experience in public service within local government, Chris is deeply passionate about addressing environmental challenges. He is dedicated to realizing Islington Council’s ambitious goal of net-zero emissions by systematically reducing and replacing the current internal combustion engine fleet with battery-electric equivalents. Islington Council is at the forefront of eliminating fossil-fuel vehicles, having pioneered innovative technologies such as the award-winning ‘upcycling’ of end-of-life diesel refuse collection vehicles into electric models. Furthermore, the council has successfully implemented Vehicle-to-Load and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) systems for refuse collection vehicles, which have been utilised to power various community events across the borough. Notably, Islington was the first local authority to operate six 7.5-ton electric cage tippers and a fully accessible community transport bus.
Chris's forward-looking approach encompasses several related initiatives, including the advancement of Vehicle-to-Grid technology, solar photovoltaic systems, and energy storage solutions. His vision includes transforming the council’s main fleet depot into a micro-grid in the near future.
