Tim Nutbeam
Tim Nutbeam is a Consultant in Emergency Medicine and Pre-hospital Emergency Medicine, and Professor of Emergency Medicine and Post-Collision Care at the University of Plymouth. He is the Director of IMPACT – the Centre for Post-Collision Research, Innovation and Translation, an organisation dedicated to improving outcomes for people injured on the roads.
Tim’s work focuses on advancing the science and systems of post-collision care, with particular emphasis on the moments immediately following a road traffic collision. Through IMPACT, he leads interdisciplinary research spanning emergency services, healthcare, and road safety partners, aiming to optimise rescue, triage, and early clinical care.
He is best known for his leadership of the EXIT project, which has challenged traditional approaches to vehicle extrication and demonstrated that, for many patients, rapid and clinically-led extrication can significantly reduce time to definitive care. His wider programme of work includes the development of the Road Injury Chain of Survival, bystander-enabled care, and the use of data and innovation to support better decision-making at the roadside.
Tim works closely with organisations including emergency services, government bodies, and international collaborators to translate research into practice. His work seeks not only to improve patient outcomes, but also to reduce the wider societal and economic impact of road injury.
