Vicki Johnson
A Physiotherapist by background, Vicki is a Lead Research Associate for Complex Interventions at the Leicester Diabetes Centre, a collaboration between the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust and University of Leicester. She develops, lead, train, evaluate and support many innovative projects, within research, the NHS and industry.
Supporting people in achieving their goals and helping them prevent or self-manage health conditions—such as type 2 diabetes—is one of the most rewarding aspects of her work. Her role involves collaborating with a diverse range of individuals, including patients, healthcare professionals, subject matter experts, companies, and various stakeholders, all working together toward a shared objective. This collaborative approach makes her work both exciting and fulfilling.
Vicki developed the SHIFT programme in partnership with lorry drivers, academic institutions, and NHS colleagues ten years ago. She initially delivered the programme herself, refining it based on feedback from participants. She then trained researchers to deliver it as part of a research trial and now trains driver trainers to implement SHIFT more broadly, enabling its far-reaching impact.
Driven by a passion for making a tangible difference, Vicki is committed to ensuring that interventions are high-quality, meaningful, and effectively reach the populations for whom they were originally designed.
